  • Catholic bioethics centres can provide support to both members of the community and health professionals through consultation, education and research in ethical aspects of contemporary health care practice and advance care planning.

Most services are freely available to all — professionals, students and the general public.

    What is bioethics?
Bioethics is a widely used term within the scientific, medical, legal, philosophical and theological communities. Literally the word means “the ethics of life” (bios being the Greek word for life).
Bioethics is a species of the science of ethics concerned especially about the beginning and ending of bodily life as well as the morality of certain medical procedures during a person’s life.

There is a long tradition of bioethical reasoning  within the Catholic faith, a tradition expressed in scripture, the writings of the Doctors of the Church, papal encyclical documents and reflections by contemporary Catholic theologians. Catholic bioethics is concerned with a broad range of issues, including social justice and the right to health care, the duty to preserve life and the limits of that duty, the ethics of human reproduction and end-of-life decisions.

The Institute offers a Graduate Diploma of Theology Studies (Psych) that is designed for those who are university graduates (or have sufficient professional or life experience in areas related to this area to qualify them for entry at a graduate certificate level in an Australian university), and have experience in providing counselling or psychotherapy as part of their responsibilities in paid or voluntary employment in the fields of health, community services, education or pastoral work. The course would benefit those engaged in psychology, social work, medicine, psychiatry, psychiatric nursing, general nursing or pastoral care. The purpose is to provide those who hold to Christian values in their professional life or who wish to offer assistance to clients or patients who would prefer a Christian faith dimension to the assistance they receive, with a Christian theological and philosophical understanding of the psychological sciences, together with the capacities necessary to work within a fully informed Christian perspective and as well as the ability to respond to issues of morality and character from a faith perspective.

One of the subjects in this course that is offered is JP576 Counselling Beginning End Life 100214, and can provide practical guidance on how to undertake beginning and end of life counseling.
